Gyuseok Yi, a doctoral student in the Department of Climate System (student researcher at the IBS Center for Climate Physics, advised by Professor June-Yi Lee), won the Grand Prize (KAOSTS President's Award) for the Future Marine Scientist Outstanding Paper in the Marine Science category. The award was presented at the 2026 Korean Association of Ocean Science and Technology Societies (KAOSTS) Joint Conference, held at the Jeju International Convention Center (ICC Jeju) on May 28.

The award-winning paper is titled ‘Future mesoscale horizontal stirring in polar oceans intensified by sea ice decline.’ By analyzing ultra-high-resolution climate model simulations, Yi revealed that the decline in sea ice caused by global warming intensifies mesoscale horizontal stirring in polar oceans.

This research was published in the November 2025 issue of the international journal Nature Climate Change.
